At Mint Dental Care, we believe treating a cavity shouldn’t always mean a drill, a needle, and numbness. For many patients, especially children, older adults, and anyone with dental anxiety, we offer alternatives that stop decay gently and effectively.
Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and Curodont Repair are two treatments that allow us to address cavities without traditional drilling. Most dental practices in Northwest Arkansas don’t offer these options. We do, because we believe in giving our patients choices.
What is Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)?
SDF is a liquid solution containing silver and fluoride that is painted directly onto a cavity. The silver kills bacteria causing the decay, and the fluoride strengthens the remaining tooth structure. The entire application takes about a minute per tooth. There’s no drilling, no anesthesia, and no discomfort.
How SDF Works
SDF stops cavity progression on contact. After application, the treated area hardens and becomes resistant to further decay. In many cases, this means a cavity can be managed without ever placing a traditional filling. SDF is applied during a regular office visit and may need to be reapplied every 6 to 12 months.
Who Is SDF For?
SDF is especially well-suited for children (particularly very young kids who can’t sit through a traditional filling), patients with dental anxiety who want to avoid the drill, older adults with multiple cavities or limited ability to tolerate lengthy procedures, and patients with special needs. It’s also a great option for managing cavities while a more comprehensive treatment plan is being developed.
A Note About Staining
SDF can cause a dark stain on the treated area of the tooth. This is a cosmetic side effect, not a health concern. For back teeth or primary (baby) teeth, most patients and parents find the tradeoff well worth it. For visible front teeth, we’ll discuss all your options so you can make an informed choice.
Curodont Repair
Curodont Repair is a biomimetic treatment that helps remineralize early-stage cavities. It uses a peptide that mimics the natural process of enamel formation, allowing the tooth to rebuild itself at the molecular level. Combined with SDF, Curodont gives us powerful options for treating decay without drilling.
What to Expect
Both SDF and Curodont treatments are quick, painless, and can be done during a regular preventive visit. There’s nothing to be nervous about. We’ll evaluate your cavities, discuss which treatment is the best fit, and take care of it right then.
Frequently Asked Questions
Not at all. SDF is painted onto the cavity with a small brush. There’s no drilling, no needles, and no discomfort. Most patients, including young children, tolerate it easily.
SDF can cause a dark stain on the treated area. This is most commonly used on back teeth or baby teeth where stopping the cavity is the priority over appearance. We’ll discuss all options with you before treatment.
SDF is ideal for children, patients with dental anxiety, and older adults. It may not be appropriate for every cavity. Large cavities or those in highly visible areas may still need traditional treatment. We’ll evaluate your situation and recommend the best approach.
